A Sharing by Deacon Sherman

I was touched by Deacon Sherman’s homily one Sunday. He was sharing about his life stories on his faith life as a Deacon, a husband and a father.

He surrendered his life to God 2 years ago by becoming a full time Deacon. Came from a good education and career background, he gave up his high pay Doctorate salary to become a Deacon. He encountered and felt the pain when it was time for his wife to give birth.

With the low allowance he is getting, his wife was willing to enter the government hospital in which he could only afford.  Just as he entered the hospital, he could not take it to see his wife lying in the hospital bed together with hundreds of other patients in the 3rd class ward. To him, it was no difference than the refugee camp.

His heart sank. He could not take it to let his wife to live in this way. As a loving husband, all he wanted is to give the best for his wife and family. Deacon Sherman was in despair and he questioned God is this how God to treat him this way afterall that he is willing to sacrifice for God and to take up his cross. He could not let his family to suffer for his sake. He rushed to seek for transfer to move his wife to at least 2nd class but there’s no room available unless he is willing to take up 1st class where there’s only 1 place left. Deacon Sherman was in concern on the price as he would not afford to pay. Out of desperation, he took up the 1st class.

As the weekend passed by, he received a token from a group of parishioners that they wanted to give some small offering to him. He was surprised to find that the token was exactly the amount of his wife’s medical bill. At that moment, he was so grateful to God for answering his prayers.

Deacon’s sharing was just another story how God showed his love for us. It is not easy to follow Christ but it is through his sharing that God is telling me he will not let us go astray if we chose to follow Him.
